Phrases 'in the motions included "declared redundant",. "placed in the possibly redundant pool",. and "placed on the recall list." But, ac- cording to education director Chuck Reid, it all boils down to a declining need for teachers due to over-all de- clining enrolment. "Normally, what has happened is that our retirements or our materni- ty leaves or our general leaves have balanced the reduced need for teach- ers ` due to declining enrolment," Reid explained. "But this year, we've reached a stage where a number of our teachers aren't ready for retire- ment ... We've reached that cross- roads." Currently, the board employs 485 secondary school teachers and 589 elementary teachers. Within the past decade, there have been limited declarations of redun- dancy at the conclusion of some Avon Maitland school years, but ,the tendency has been to rehire those teach- ers the follow- ing September — once funding, staffing and en- rolments are finalized. And Reid said, "our hope is that well be able to call all (the released teachers) back over time." But this year, that's very un- likely to happen within just a few months. "I think we're going to be look- ing at this for at least the next couple of years," the education di- rector stressed. "If we're going to be realistic, I don't think (this year). ii..an - anomaly.": • WED.
