A $17,000 banner project aims to woo travellers downtown
Susan Huiidertui&rk
Sixteen banners along Goderich
Street (Highway 8) installed on every
other lamp post from Adam Street on
the west end of Seaforth to Centen-
nial Drive on the east will attempt
to encourage travellers to stop in
Seaforth, says Huron East economic
development officer Jan Hawley.
"It's been a challenge to get people
going along Highway 8 to the lake or
the theatre to stop and shop down-
town," she says.
"Before I worked here, I got on
Highway 8 and I didn't get off it. It's
hard to look around when you're in
traffic. But, ,when I had a reason to
turn down Main Street, I saw Sea -
forth had a beautiful downtown," she
says.
The $17,000 project is being fund-
ed by the Seaforth Community De-
velopment Trust.
"I had no money left in my bud-
get so I went to the trust and they
embraced the banner project," she
says.
Each of the banners will have a
photograph of a different element
offered in Seaforth, labelled with a
word or two, such as shopping, parks,
recreation or heritage.
Hawley enthuses about one photo-
graph of a calf she took on the Eckert
farm she calls "stunning."
"I want to show we're more than
urban, we're `Turban.' I wanted that
little bit of country. We're a settle-
ment set in rural Ontario and at the '
edge of Seaforth is a big, huge dairy
farm," she says.
Other photographs she hopes to in-
clude will be Cardno Hall, the new
doppler machine at the Gateway
Rural Health Research Institute, a
hole at the Seaforth Golf Club, local
church rooftops and the artwork of
Murals in Metal.
"I have a collection of good photo-
graphs. I've got more ideas than I
have banners," she says.
Also included on the banners will
be the new Seaforth Spirit logo of
Cardno Hall, designed by a commu-
nications specialist who works at-
Precision
t-Precision Print in Goderich and the
heading "Historic Seaforth."
Hawley says the new brand turns
Cardno Hall into an icon that helps
everyone recognize Seaforth.
"That was an outsider coming into
our community that chose that im-
age," she says.
Hawley says the banner idea is one.
she brought from Goderich, where
she worked_ . as the. Goderich BIA
manager.
"I bring all this experience from
Goderich with me to Seaforth where
I've connected with unbelievable
people with the same energy as I
have;" she says.
She's hoping the banners will en-
courage passersby to "stay for a few
hours, stay overnight or even stay
for a lifetime."
The banners are expected to be in..
stalled in June.

CONTEMPORARY THREE-
BEDROOM HOME
A dramatic arched entry greets visitors
to this contemporary three-bedroom
family home.
The stone facing on the four columns
flanking the porch is repeated along the
front of the house, adding to the street
appeal.
Once inside the foyer, there's a view to
the great room at the heart of the house,
and beyond to the sundeck. The great
room's nine=foot vaulted 'ceilings add to
its spacious feeling. A built-in entertain-
ment unit and a gas fireplace occupy
one wall, while a half -wall separates the
great room from stairs to the unfinished
basement.
One entire wall of windows overlooks
the rear sundeck — a sure guarantee
that this multi-purpose living space will
be full of natural Tight.
