the area as a place the swans would
go. We're still looking at finalizing
how," he says.
While resident near. St. Columban
are concerned about possible health
effects with the planned 450 -metre
setbacks from the wind turbines,
Menendez says the set-
backs chosen are driven
by municipal require-
ments and Ministry ' of
the Environment re-
quirements.
"The closest homes are
going to be 450 metres
away but the major-
ity will be 600 to 700 or.
even 1,000 metres away
in some cases," he says.
Responding to requests
to follow World Health
Organization recom
mendations to ,place
wind turbines at least
1.6 km away from where
people live, MVlenendez says
it would be impossible when the 100 -
acre parcels of rural land are taken
into consideration.
"If they were to impose a limit of
1,000 metres, what would effectively
happen and the people protesting
know this - is there wouldn't be any
turbines in southern Ontario with
the combination of houses, setbacks
and how property is divided," he
says:
Menendez says the two wind proj-
ects CASA is working on have been
publicized for several years both with
advertising and stories in the Huron
Expositor. A story was printed in
March of 2007 when the
environmental assess-
ment began on the two
wind projects.
"At the time, we got
about four phone calls,
but there were no real
concerns. One was
from a guy who want-
ed to know why his
neighbour would get a
wind turbine but they
wouldn't" he said.
Menendez said anoth-
er was from a woman
who lived nearby, ex-
pressed her happiness
that the projects were
going ahead and want-
ed more information about it.
"They were benign questions," says
Menendez.
"This isn't something we started
yesterday and isn't something- we're
rushing through. On the contrary, it's
taken years," he says, adding they've
been working on the project for over
four years.

Test tower in Tuckersmith could
lead to Brucefield wind project
A test tower has been erected on a farm in Tuckersmith as FPLE Canadiani
Wind and its partner Canadian Green Power look into the possibility of a
wind project in the Brucefield area.
"We're at the early stages of research and development. There is interest
with local landowners and we want to work with them," says Josie Hernan-
dez, senior media relations specialist with FPLE Canadian Wind.
Hernandez says no conclusions have yet been drawn about whether the
wind is adequate in the area for a wind project.
She adds that Canadian Greenpower will be the company securing land
leases but she wasn't certain if any leases have yet been signed.
Hernandez says the details of what size wind project is being planned are
not available.

As well, he says CASA deposited
letters in the mailboxes of every
home in the study area after discov-
ering that some of the property own-
ers did not live
nearby.
"We have done
the appropriate
studies and sit-
ed the turbines

When we put up
the anemometer

sure the wind),
we had to get a

Menendez adds
that the press
