MAPLE SYRUP NOT UP TO
STANDARD.
People who make maple syrup for
the market should bear in mind that it
should test 13 lbs. 2. oz. to the gal-
lon, otherwise they are .subject to a
fine. Considerable dissatisfaction and
complaints are being made elaaly of
poor syrup being sold in town, and
Constable. Bissett is now en the look-
out for offenders of the law.
DIED IN NEW YORK.
Last week mention was made in
these columns of the illness of Mrs.
W. N Manning of London, who was
visiting in New York. Mrs. .!Canning
has since died, Mrs. Manning, in com-
pany with her husband, left London
'about three weeks ago,,on a pleasure
trip south. Mrs. Manning had been in
New York but a few days when she
was taken i11 and removed to the. hos-
pital. Although her condition was re-
garded as serious, leer recovery was ex-
pected. From what can be learned she
died from a stroke. Mr. Manning ,was
a former resident of Exeter and all his
early life was spent here_

Any person who takes a paper reg-
ularly from the post office, whether
addressed -in his name ar anoth ers, or
whether he has subscribed or not, is
responsible for payment.
If a person orders his paper discon-
tinued he must pay a$1 arrears, or the
publisher may continue to send it until
payment is made and then collect the
whale amount whether the paper is
taken or not.
The courts have decided that refus-
ing to take newspapers 'or periodicals
from the .post office, or removing them
and leaving them unpaid, is prima facie
evidence of intention of fraud.
