Alec Scott of the ABCA says the price of a new -station is $20,000 and the cost to rim it is. $10,000. He added that the ABCA has thought of opening a new station in Dublin and is raising money for it. Mike Kraemer of the municipal- ity's operations department said the best thing for residents with leaky basements is to install a backflow preventer in their homes to reduce the risk of water seeping in. He also recommended getting a sump pump with a battery •back-up for electrical blackouts or one that can run off a car battery. "We might also be coming to your door, throwing dye down your drains to see where they're heading," Krae- mer said. Over the past few weeks, the flow of every stoma sewer in Dubin has been videotaped to indicate .where any blockages or 'prnhl em n ! drains may occur. The central issue around the drain- age problems is the age of three municipal drains in Dublin, one of which was constructed in 1914. Extremely high water levels on occasions in December and Febru- ary - overwhelmed the drains and reached flood levels not seen since the 1970s. "There were white caps in the field almost," one man in attendance said. "There was water going across the road." The Ausable Bayfield Conserva- tion Authority, which monitors wa- ter level flows at stations in Varna and Seaforth, is responsible for ad- vising Dublin about road closures and if residential areas are at risk from flooding. Kraemer says he's still waiting to hear back from the video company about where the potentialproblems occur. "Your information will help us. A lot of our infrastructure is old," he said, adding that "the amount of snow we've had since Nov l was a major problem." Residents attending the meeting were asked to fill out a municipal form indicating problems they've encountered with flooding on their properties. If they wanted an inspection or cleaning performed on a drain, they were told to sign a request form at the municipal office, which would be forwarded to the next West Perth council meeting. Bill Dietrich, drainage superinten- dent for West Perth, said if there is a problem with a private drain on a landowner's property, it -would only be fixed at that person's expense. Ii4. said any request will be for- warded to the conservation author- ity before any work is done. "If it's a tile draining system, if it's blockage, that can be fixed," Dietrich said. To be upgraded, a written munici- pal request would also need to be submitted and then council can be petitioned to have an engineer ap- pointed to have the drain replaced, he said. The Liffey drain, which starts in Logan Township and flows to Dub- lin, serving 6,700 acres of mostly ag- riculture land, has not had a report completed on it since 1949. One resident in attendance noted that while the depth of the drain is the same as it was 60 years ago, "hundreds of farm drains have been added since then." The Staton drain, which was built in 1963. and serves 170 acres north of the train tracks in Dublin, has a 14 inch tile, which might need to 'be upgraded to a bigger size. In the 1980s, work was completed to twin sections of the drain that were under sized, and additional upgrades were made. The Dublin municipal drain, con- structed in 1914, serves a watershed of 50 acres and can have branches added to it, Dietrich said. - Strat ford • 551 Huron I' • 273-6780 Clilt'tiliiti • , • IShow Schedule • for April 3rd - 9th IFast & Furious Nightly at 7:00 & 9:15, Sat/Sun matinee at 2pm St. 1 1 I 1 347746 if Adventureland et 7:00 &9:15, Sat/Sun matinee at 2pm , INightly Monsters vs. Aliens Nightly at 7:00 & 9:15, Sat/Sun matinee at 2pm IRace To Witch Mountain Nightly at 7:00 & 9:15, Sat/Sun matinee at 2pm PC, I Duplicity I Nightly at 8:45 & 9:15, Sat/Sun matinee at 2pm I • . 4 •,.•• • .- 1. •. • 1 1•s.•e?. , 4 4.'44 •••,• % y•,1 • •
