Friendly bet to help local food bank
Dan Schwab

A friendly bet has pitted two
Main Street business owners
in a challenge to see who can
collect the most food items for
the Seaforth and District Food
Bank this week.
Seaforth Foodland owner
Steve Delchiaro agreed to al-
low a van, donated by Doug
and Gayle Schroeder of Win-
throp, to park in the grocery
store's lot from April 2-4 to k
collect canned goods and other*,
non-perishable food items.
It will be parked there from
9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on April 2-3
and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on
April 4.
At the same time,a pickup
truck collecting donations will
be parked in front of the Sea -
forth Bakery
In an effort to create more
public awareness about the
food drive, owner Christine
Behnke challenged Delchiaro
to a friendly bet to see which
location could bring in more
food for the charity.
"It just makes it more fun,"
Behnke says, adding that
whoever loses the bet would
have to donate $25 to the food
bank.
Both businesses will also
make additional efforts to
encourage their customers to
contribute.
Delchiaro says Foodland will
make up some donqtitifi bags
with about $5 or $6 worth of
groceries inside that shoppers
can purchase on their way out
of the store to contribute to
the van's collection.
"They'd be readily available
and convenient," he says. "It's
a win-win situation for every-
body."
Behnke will offer free coffee
all day to anyone who, brings
in a canned good or non-per-
ishable food item. Page

says, adding that she knows
people who regularly visit the
food bank. "With these eco-
nomic times people are losing
their jobs. I bet if you walked
a mile in any direction you'd
run into a kid who didn't have
breakfast. I'm thankful I can
help."
Food bank chair Maureen
Spittal says local schools and
church groups have also of-
fered to visit the van and do-
nate goods.
Spittal says the food bank
can use all the donations it
can get, since the number of
visitors has dramatically in-
creased.
