The St. Anne's Secondary School
girls' swim team proved they are
among the best in the province after
finishing eighth out of 267 schools
during OFSAA March 3-4 in Etobi-
coke.
Overall, the combined boys' and
girls' swim team finished 43rd out
of 267 schools in Ontario. But dur-
ing the event, no boys swam in any
races and the points accumulated for
the team were entirely by the girls.
"Pretty amazing," says coach Ter-
rie Van Osch. "We were thrilled. The
girls swam very well and there were
swim team
many personal bests."
Swimmer Nadine Otten earned a
bronze medal for her efforts in the
junior girls' 200 -metre free relay
team and the junior girls' 50 -metre
freestyle race.
Otten and her teammates on the
junior girls' free relay team -- Ni-
cole Van Gaalen, Marnel Muller and
Kristen Devereaux — finished in 5th
place overall with a personal best
time in the race.
Correena Otten finished in sixth
place in the 100 -metre backstroke.
"She gave it her all," Van Osch
says. "She was so exhausted that she
could barely get out of the pool."

nior girls' medley relay team swam
a personal best time, but were dis-
qualified because of a bad exchange.
Van Osch says OFSAA "really
opened the eyes of the girls about
how hard the competition is at the
provincial level."
She says there were a number of
teams that sent approximately 45
swimmers - many more than the St.
Anne's squad.
"It was a long two days of competi-
tion but it was a great experience,"
'Van Osch says. "We have not had
many provincial medals in swim-
ming from OFSAA and I'm not sure
if we ever had a relay team in the
finals before. All the swimmers rep-
resented St. Anne's very well."
