Secw phase of study
for Egmondville sewers
beginning this month
Susan. Hundertinerk
As Huron East looks over the applications to fill two
steering committee positions with Egmondville residents,
the second phase of the environmental assessment for a
possible sewer system in Egmondville is beginning.
"The steering committee is going to act as a sounding
board, run ideas by each other and look at preliminary
proposals before we take it to the 'public," says environ-
mental planner Kelly Vader, of B.M. Ross and Associ-
ates.
While the first phase determined that Egmondville
does have a problem with its septic systems allowing
high levels of E.coli into the Egmondville storm 'sewer,
Silver Creek and the Bayfield River, a public meeting in
November resulted in the approval to move on to the sec-
ond phase.
The second phase will involve looking at the possible
alternatives to solve the problem, along with potential
costs.
"The original study identified the project. Now, we're
looking at how to do it the best way, whether that's grav-
ity -fed sewers or an alternative• way," says Vader.
A proposed time frame of the second phase of the study
begins the study between January and March, 2009 and
publishes its completion between July and September,
2010;-.
"We feel it's a reasonable time frame but we could run
into roadblocks. In this kind of study, you have to com-
plete one task before moving on to the next," she says.
Between March and September this year, the steering
committee hopes to circulate project information to re-
view agencies, inventory the environmental components
including natural, social, cultural and economic and do
whatever specialized studies are required such as arche-
ological, biological or geotechnical studies.
Between April and August of this year, the committee
plans to identify the alternative solutions, review feed-
back from the public and agencies and present their find-
ings to Huron East council.
Between August and October, a public information
meeting will be held presenting the alternatives and
their preliminary costs.
From October to December, whatever additional inves-
tigations required are scheduled.
Sometime between January and March, 2010, the com-
mittee hopes to identify the preferred alternative and
present it to council,
Between March and May, a second public meeting will
be held to talk about the preferred alternative, its pro-
posed costs and a construction time frame.
And, from May to September, concerns from the meet-
ing will be addressed with a final report prepared.
"We want lots of feedback about what people like and
don't like and we're hoping for questions or suggestions,"
says Vader, who can be reached at kvader@bmross.net or
