Huron County summer job placementrprogram fo

Susgu Ijunderimark
A summer job placement program
for students in the healthcare field
is being expanded out from Huron
County into Perth and Bruce as
well.
Employers in the healthcare sector
in all three counties are being invit-
ed to submit proposals to Healthkick
Huron by Feb. 13 for funding for a
total of 13 positions.
"This is our -first year to branch out
into the other two counties and we've
already had a number of requests
submitted," says Healthkick man-
ager Laura Overholt.
Since 2005, 33 placements have
been made available throughout Hu-
ron County at various jobs including
pharmacies, nursing homes, medi-
cal clinics and chiropractic offices for
students training in thoses fields.
"Studies have shown that young
people from rural areas who leave to
.pursue higher education in health-
care are more likely to return to prac c postect on the tteaitniuc
tice in rural areas. Giving students
an opportunity to experience their
chosen healthcare field in their own
community will help expose them to
the exciting potential occupations
available to them," says a press re-
lease from Healthkick.
"We open their minds to consider
bringing their skills home to =rid
communities," says the press re-
lease.

Overholt says the growing demand*
for healthcare workers in rural com-
munities has led to the decision to of-
fer the rural job placement program
again. While 13 placements will be
made available this year, the num-
ber will grow to 17 next year and 20
the following year.
She says that last year, with 1.1. po-
sitions available, 15 or 16 workplac-
es applied for the funding."
"We will consider everyone at once
but there might be a few we have to
turn down," she says.
