Huron Expositor, 2009-02-11, Page 8Page .t' The Huron Expositor • February 11, 2009 News Lamont retires after 35 -year nursing career at SCH Susan Hundertniark Though she's been putting off the decision for some time, Judy Lamont has retired from nursing at Seaforth Qommunity Hospital after a 35' -year career there. "I was going to retire a year ago but I stayed an extry year. But, I decided I'd done enough I wanted to get out before I got sick," says the 61 -year- old Seaforth woman. "I could have retired at 55 but I wasn't ready then," she says. Lamont, who grew up in Seaforth, trained as a nurse in Stratford and returned home to work after a year at Stratford General Hospital on the surgery floor. Just 20 when sIe completed her three years' of nurses' training, La- mont says there were 26 nurses in her graduating class. Since coming to SCH in 1973, she's worked in every department from emergency to obstetrics to the oper- ating room and the medical -surgical floor. She was working on the medical - surgical floor and in the ER when she retired. "I wasn't ever fussy on ER but I still did it," she says. As a young girl looking for a career, , Lamont says the choices back then were limited to nursing, teaching and being a secretary. Tho shy to teach, she thought she'd give nursing a try and has enjoyed the variety and the challenge. "I've really enjoyed it for the most part. You see people die who you know and you have to get used to that. And, you see people at their worst but it's also nice to see them get better. and leave the hospital," she says. "The odd time you save a life and you realize all your training wasn't in vain," she adds. Because it's a small hospital, Sea - forth Community Hospital's staffhas become like family, says Lamont. 444 "We all cooperate and work really well together. I would say we're the best you can be over there (at the hospital)," she says, adding that she enjoyed a retirement party held for her recently by the staff. She says working and living in the same community has had its pros and cons. "You can walk to work - it's handy. But, if it's stormy, you know they're going to be calling you in. That ' phone rings and you feel guilty if you don't go back in," she says. Lamont says she's been watch- ing how the na- tional nursing shortage has af- fected SCH over the past several years and won- ders what the an - Judy Lamont sorer is. "I knew three years ago we were in trouble but I don't know what the answer is and what would draw more nurses here. I don't know why more young people aren't interested in nursing," she says. "Just come out and try it if you're interested in helping people. And, you've got to give it some time to learn the ropes," she urges anyone interested in a nursing career. While Lamont plans to spend some time redecorating her house and puttering in the garden in the short term, she's not sure she's completely finished with nursing. "If I get bored, maybe I'll be back part-time or casual," she says.
