Fire stations to be dispatched by Stratford department
Susan Hunder.tnia
The 12 fire stations currently dis-
patched out of Seaforth Community
Hospital will soon be served by the
Stratford Fire Department.
Huron East Fire Chief Marty BSe-
dard told Huron East council at its
Jan. 20 meeting that after receiving
notice from the Huron Perth Health-
care Alliance that Seaforth hospital
won't offer the service after April,
2009, the Huron County Mutual
Fire Aid Association approached
the Stratford Fire Department, the
London Central Ambulance Com-
munications Centre and the Ha-
nover Police to find a replacement.
"Stratford was the most economi-
cal way to. go," Bedard told council.
"All the fire departments are taking
this to their councils. We're pushing
forward with this."
Because most of Huron County,
excluding Goderich, Wingham and
Howick, is inputted into the 911 sys-
- tem using a single polygon (or cov-
erage area), Bedard said each fire
• area will now need its own polygon,
a process Bell Canada has already
started at a cost .of close to $2,000
each.
"That way, the calls will go through
911 and Stratford will know exactly
what fire department it will go to,"
said Bedard, adding that currently,
calls going into the Seaforth hos-
pital have to be sorted out by the
dispatcher to whichever fire depart-
ment is closest to the call.
"Stratford . won't take our ser-
vice unless we make the polygon
change," he said.
Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler won-
dered if Seaforth hospital might
be persuaded to keep offering the
service if the polygon model was
changed but Mayor Joe Seili said
that option was unlikely.
"The decision was made clear sev-
eral times. They say they're not in
the fire department dispatch busi-
ness," Seili said of the HPHA deci-
Bedard said areas that receive
coverage from more than one
•
department will need to become a
separate polygon.
In Huron East, four polygons
will be needed for Seaforth, Brus-
sels, Grey and an overlapping area
served by both Brussels and Grey.
The change will require a one-time
cost to Huron East of $2,338.26 per
polygon.
Bedard said annual dispatching
fees will be based on a municipal-
ity's population, adding that Huron
East will pay a fee fairly close to
the $13,500 it's paying now for the
three stations.
Stratford Fire Department cur-
rently dispatches nine fire stations.
