"Everyone has the power of one to stop bullying," declared actor Renee Summerfield, of Toronto to an audi- ence of Seaforth Public School stu- dents. A presentation by Soren Bennick Productions brought the message of the importance of reporting bullying to SPS last Wednesday. Along with a series of skits that demonstrated the roles of the bully, target and bystander during instances of physical, verbal, exclu- sion and cyber bullying, the stu- dents were asked to take an anti - bullying oath promising not to bully or stand by whenever they see bul- lying. "Use your power of one to stand up for yourself. When you do that, you're at the top and the bully doesn't look so big. When you do that in Seaforth, everyone in your community is safe," said Summerfield. On the way out of the presenta- tion, each student was shown a box with a mirror inside to see that they each have the power to stop bully- ing. "This show is a result of principals asking us to impart this information since we have a gift for grabbing kids' attention," said Soren Bennick president Michael Sheahan in an interview after the show. While the Power of One show has been performed across Canada close to 3,000 times, Wednesday's perfor- mance was the first in Seaforth. "It's a ruggedly tested show that compliments what school boards are already doing," said Sheahan. He said the anti -bullying oath is often very effective in bystander sit- uations if a student is reminded that he or she made the promise to report bullying. "It helps them realize when they break their contract," he said. ..uatriiimataintik Ini ur • ...k4K►4•YItIi2al1i111Y1u..
