Registration deadline for Amazing Race coming quickly
Local version of popular TV show raised 530,000 for charities in first two years
Ben Forrest
Kimberly Payne, executive
director of the Huron United
Way, smiled as she recalled
memories of the annual
Amazing Race, the organiza-
tion's major fundraiser during
the past two years.
And, she said she's looking for-
ward to the third edition,
planned for Aug. 25, an event
designed to raise money for local
charities, foster an appreciation
of the Huron community, and
create memories for a lifetime —
all while having a blast.
Payne noted the event has
lived up to its intentions in the
fundraising department, gather-
ing well over $30,000 in its first
two years.
The fun factor has been consid-
erable as well, and it appears
memories are not in short sup-
ply either.
She cited a mother and daugh-
ter team from Brucefield who
participated in the first
Amazing Race, and
entered beoause
they wanted an
enjoyable activity
to do together.
"At the end of the
day, they said they
absolutely created
memories for a life-
time," Payne stat-
ed, "antd we've
heard that from the
racers: that it's just
memories for a life-
time."
"They had so
much fun, because
it's a relationship -
building thing."
The Amazing Race
pits as many as 30 teams of two
against each other in a dash
across Huron County guided by
riddles or limericks that reveal
the location of the next required
destination.
Sometimes the
next location can be
reached by foot, but
others require a vehi-
cle, Payne explained.
Challenges are
faced along the way,
and though revealing
this year's tasks
would compromise
the race itself, previ-
ous editions have
included paintball
activities, roping,
milking and feeding
cattle, and digging
through cow patties
j at a farm north of
Dungannon.
One of the more
amusing challenges from years
past took place in Grand Bend,

Teams were required to desig-
nate one member to wear a fire
helmet with a bowl hot -glued to
the top, while the other member
was blindfolded and asked to
gather water from the lake
using a ladle.
The objective was to fill the
bowl on the first team member's
head, and then dump the water
into a pail nearby.
"They were drenched," said
Payne. "It was absolutely hilari-
ous."
The registration process for
this year's race is well under
way, and the deadline is set for
Aug. 1.
Teams are asked to raise $100
in pledges by that date, and an
additional $400 by the time of
the race.

will be entered automatically,
