CHSS basketball teams
bring home silver and
bronze from WOSSAA
Jennifer Hubbard
A successful season ended on a
high note for CHSS's junior and
senior boys' basketball teams
recently, as both teams brought
home WOSSAA medals.
For the first time
many years, the local
high school sent two
teams to the Western
Ontario Secondary
School Athletic
Association (WOSSAA)
championships in
Woodstock on Feb. 28.
Beginning their day
against Holy Cross
from Stratford, the
junior Redmen got off
to a slow start, and
could never make up
the difference in the
game.
Losing by 10 points,
the juniors moved on to
face Mitchell in the
bronze medal game.
CHSS got out to a
large lead and never
looked back, to take
home bronze.
In the senior division, CHSS
jumped all over London Christian to
build up an 18 -point lead in the sec-
ond half of the team's first game of
the day.
The Redmen cruised to a double-
digit victory, putting them into the
finals against the host Woodstock
in
Collegiate Institute Red Devils.
CHSS fought the higher -ranked
team all game, trading the lead with
them.
Down by 10 with five minutes left
in the game, the Redmen fought all
the way back to hold a two-point
lead with 3.2 seconds left.
However, an unfortu-
nate situation led to
the Red Devils making
a free throw to cut the
lead to one, then hit-
ting a buzzer beater to
win gold.
"With two strong
showings, the Redmen
look to rebound next
year and return back
to WOSSAA to take a
run at the gold medal
again," coach Wes
Morley said in an arti-
cle posted on the CHSS
website.
The local teams
earned a spot a WOS-
SAA during the Huron -
Perth championships
in mid-February.
After beating
Goderich in the quarter-
finals 40-36, the seniors lost to
Stratford Northwestern in the semi-
finals 69-36.
The juniors won two straight — 46-
33 against Listowel and 41-37
against St. Michael's of Stratford —
prior to the Huron -Perth finals on
March 8, where they lost to
Stratford Northwestern 50-25.
'With two
strong show-
ings,
howings, the
Redmen look
to rebound
next year and
return back to
WOSSAA to
take a run at
the gold medal
again,'--
