Twenty-one Seaforth seniors found
themselves searching for a new home
last week, after the manager of
Maplewood Manor announced she
would be closing the retirement home
facility at the end of March.
Staff, residents and family members
were notified of the impending closure
on Tuesday evening — March 13.
"It's a big mix-up, that's what it is,
and I don't know how we're going to fix
it," said Alice Reid, one of 14
Maplewood residents were able to find
a room nearby at Seaforth Manor on
James Street.
"I just don't know how everyone will
get through it."
Linda Potrykus, retirement director
of operations with Provincial Long
Term Care Inc., said Seaforth Manor
was originally contacted by Maplewood
staff.
"Maplewood staff are very dedicated
and they were hoping that residents
could get into Seaforth Manor and not
have to leave the area," she commented.
"We're always prepared for people to
move in, in an emergency situation at

While 45 teams gathered from across
Ontario to compete in the provincial
broomball championships in Stratford
over the weekend, it came down to two
Seaforth teams in the intermediate
women's category to win both gold and
silver.
Seaforth's Parr Line team won gold
and Witches of Broom won silver in the
intermediate ladies' division while
Seaforth's Snipers won bronze in the
intermediate men's division.
"We've won the silver many times but
it's been 16 years since we won gold
provincially," says Parr Line team
member Tanya Merrier.
"It's not a surprise but we definitely
worked hard to win," she says.
Parr Line came second in the
regionals to Seaforth's Polar Ice team,
which did not place in the provincials.
Merner says three juvenile players
were recruited to play in the
provincials with Parr Line and they
were "an asset with speed."
Parr Line won each of its four games,
including 2-0 game against the Blyth
Rebels, a 1-0 game against Polar Ice, a
1-0 game against the Witches of Broom
and then a 4-0 final game against the
Witches, who battled their way back
from the bottom to compete in the gold
medal game.
The Parr Line players come from
Seaforth, Blyth, Brussels, Londesboro,
Bayfield, Goderich, Palmerston, St.
Columban, Lucknow and Stratford.
Witches of Broom won their spot in
the provincials as a wild card since
they placed fourth in the regionals.
Witches of Broom coach Kim
Hunking says her team "played the
