Those we love are never really lost to us -
we feel them in so many special ways
- through friends
they always cared about
and dreams they left behind,
in beauty that they added to our days...
inwords of wisdom we still carry with us
and memories that never will be gone...

More than 30 curlers
expected in Vanastra
for memorial bonspiel
Jennifer Hubbard
MEMINEREMEM
More than 30 area curlers will be hitting the rink in
honour of a Canadian curling legend this weekend
during the sixth annual Sandra Schmirler memorial
bonspiel at the Vanastra Curling Club.
Set for Saturday, Feb. 17, the event will Feature a
three -game bonspiel and raise money for the Sandra
Schmirler Foundation.
A total of eight Vanastra and Seaforth-based teams
are registered for the 2007 junior tournament, which
begins around 9 a.m.
The event was originally spearheaded by Erin
Jamula, a St. Anne's graduate and Bayfield -area
resident, who became inspired by Schmirler after
watching the Canadian women's curling team win gold
at the 1998 Olympics.
"I started the tournament when I was in Grade 12,
hoping to attract my peers and raise awareness about
the foundation," she explained.
"Sandra was highly competitive and very talented,
but she knew there was more to it than winning.
Whether she won or lost, she was out there with her
friends, having fun. That's what inspired me the
most."
And while Jamula isn't able to make it home from
Hamilton's McMaster University for the event, a
dedicated group of volunteers have taken over the
helm — including Dawna Glen, Lori VanDenHengel
and Janet Jamula.
Support from the Vanastra Curling Club and area
businesses has also led to the event's ongoing success.
Participants are once again collecting pledges, but
Jamula encouraged anyone who wishes to support the
cause to stop by the curling centre on Saturday.
More than $10,000 has been raised since the event
began and Jamula is hoping to see at least $1,000 in
donations this year.
Created in 2001, the Sandra Schmirler Foundation's'
mission is "caring for babies in crisis through direct
giving to neonatal care across Canada."
