Seaforth businessman Pete Klaver wants
Huron East to become a leader in the fight
against global warming.
During a presentation to council on Feb. 6
that was sometimes emotional, Klaver offered
to provide councillors with copies of the book
and DVD of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth.
"This is the issue of the century bar none.
The debate among scientists is over - it's time
to do something," he told council.
Klaver, who grew up in the Seaforth area
and has farmed for many years and owned a
business in Seaforth for the past eight years,
said the local council is "an innovative bunch
that is not afraid to take a stand."
He asked councillors to "put this on a seri-
ous list of things to do," including taking a
leadership role with tree planting and "show
an example to farmers that it's important."
"We have the option in a rural community
to plant trees. Trees take the carbon out of the
air," he said.
Klaver also suggested that it's
time to get serious about getting
public transportation in rural areas.
"We've been hooked on gas for the
last 200 years - before that was the
horse and buggy. But, we've got to
start carpooling and providing bus
service to factories and neighbouring
towns," he said.
Offering to start a petition to show
local support for his concern about
global warming, Klaver pointed to
opinion polls that show 25 per cent

begins talks
to take over
Walton Hall
Huron East is entering negotia-
tions with the Walton Women's
Institute to take over ownership of
the Walton Hall.
Huron East recently received a let-
ter from the Walton W.I. which has
owned to hall the 31 years, operat-
ing it for 21 years. It is currently
being operated by the Walton Hall
Board.
The hall was recently given a
facelift with new siding, windows,
furnace and lighting with the help of
a Trillium grant.
"The hall board will continue to
operate this community hall but
after 51 years of service in the com-
munity, the Walton Women's
Institute's hope is that Huron East
will take ownership of the communi-
ty hall," said the letter to council.
Council passed a motion to begin
negotiations.
ment as the top issue.
"This is an opportunity for you to leave a
legacy for your children and grandchildren,"
he said.
Mayor Joe Seili told Klaver he also wanted
to see more trees planted, especially along
roadsides.
"When it's stormy out and you can't see
where you're going, at least if there's trees
along the road you don't end up in the ditch,"
he said.
Seili said Huron East has started planting
more trees than it had in previous years.
McKillop Coun. Bill Siemon pointed out
that a field of corn does as much to absorb
carbon as a stand of trees.
Klaver responded that if it becomes fashion-
able to be environmentally aware, farmers
might be more likely to spend money on trees
and windmills than on "a fancy pick-up."
"If you think I'm too emotional, I'll buy you
the book or the movie. It's strong stuff," he
said.
