Complaint sparks conversation
over arena heaters at council

After getting a complaint from a Huron
East ratepayer, council wants to know why
Huron East arenas have heaters but rarely
turn them on.
"We would get more people out to the games
if they could sit in comfort," said Deputy -
Mayor Bernie MacLellan, who brought the
concern to council at its Dec. 19 meeting.
"I was at a game where the front hall was
packed with people watching through the
glass but some brave people were sitting in
the arena with blankets," he said.
Brussels Coun. Frank Stretton said the
Brussels arena has a policy that the heaters
are only turned on if the temperature gets
below -5 Celcius.
"Our arena manager is doing what we want-
ed," agreed Grey Coun. Alvin McLellan.
"It's an idea for saving money but if we get
feedback from the public that they want
something different, we would change the
rules," he said.
.Clerk -Administrator Jack McLachlan said
Seaforth arena has a similar policy.
McLellan added that the heaters are
thought to raise the temperature of the ice.
Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath said
that if the donors of the four heaters in
Seaforth's arena learn that they are not being
used, "they won't be very happy with this con-
versation."
He suggested that if the heaters are only
going to be used three or four times a winter,
they should be taken aut.
"I'm not so sure how scientific our arena
managers have gotten on this. Maybe they
should put the heaters on for four hours and
measure if the temperature has gone up on
the ice," said McGrath.
Mayor Joe Seili pointed out that the infra-
red heaters will only heat the surface of what
they're pointed at, not the surrounding air
temperature.
He added that his daughter, who has multi-
ple sclerosis, cannot sit and watch her sons
play hockey when the heaters aren't on.
"And, there are a lot of 30 -40 -year-old par-
ents in that situation," he said.
"A few more grandparents would come out
to enjoy the games if
they could sit under

something warm,"
agreed McGrath.
Seaforth Coun.
Joe Steffler said the
heaters were put in
the arenas for the
comfort of the public
and should be used.
"People pay
their $3 to get in•and
then they have to
watch the game
through the glass.
The heaters are there
for a reason," he said.
"You go into the
JLC (John Labatt
Centre in London)
and sit there in your
shirtsleeves and that
ice should be melt-
ing," said Steffler.
