Cheryl Heath
Deb Shewfelt is now the Warden
of the County.
The Goderich Mayor was present-
ed with the key to the county, along
with its crest during the inaugural
session of county council.
"This seat feels pretty good," joked
Shewfelt, while taking his spot at
the front of council chambers, as his
partner, Marilyn, looked on from the
gallery with friends and relatives of
councillors.
Shewfelt, who was acclaimed to
the position, was sworn in by retired
judge, James Donnelly.
"It's a pleasure for me to be here.
The guest of honour is a man I
respect and admire," says Donnelly,
who added: "At the moment, you are
the Mayor of Goderich, when I get
finished with you, you are going to
be the Warden of Huron County."
For his first act as warden,
Shewfelt welcomed new, old and
"recycled" county councillors.
Shewfelt also gave praise to out-
going warden Rob Morley for his
•
"progressive leadership" and initia-
tives.
Shewfelt's goals for the coming
term run the gamut from cultural
social justice issues.
"It's been 30 years since there's
been social housing built in the
county," said Shewfelt of a recently
completed housing study.
Shewfelt also favours working
towards a way to find grants or
interest-free loans to help property
owners that need to make changes
to their septic tanks now that the
Huron County Health Unit's inspec-
tion program is under way.
Shewfelt is also a strong propo-
nent of finding a resolution to the
question of the fate of the historic
Ball's Bridge. The county, says
Shewfelt, needs to take stock of its
cultural and heritage sites.
The creation of a youth advisory
council, as well as doctor recruit-
ment and the Clean Water Act, also
made Shewfelt's list of priorities.
"I think it's going to be interesting
and challenging, and I really' look
forward to working " with each and
every one," added Shewfelt.
