Huron East
defers tax on
farmland for
third year
Susan Hund"ertmark
Huron East farmers will be able to defer
their farmland property taxes for another
year.
Despite a suggestion from
administration that stabilized commodity
prices might allow the municipality to
return to regular billing for farmers,
councillors voted to continue the two-year
program.
"I wouldn't say farming is great yet but
it has improved and I'm looking for
direction from council," said Deputy -Clerk
Brad Knight.
Knight shared commodity prices from
Dec. 4 showing soft white wheat rising
from $2.95 a bushel in 2005 to $4.88 a
bushel in 2006 and old crop corn rising.
from $2.52 a bushel in 2005 to $3.40 a
bushel in 2006.
Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan was .in
favour of Knight's suggestionto
discontinue the tax deferral this year.
"If things go south again, we've got
nothing to give them down the road. It's
appropriate to cycle it," he said.
But, the rest of council disagreed with
MacLellan.
Tuckersmith Coun. Les Falconer pointed
out that Huron East has received a lot, of
praise and attention across the province
for its support of local farmers.
"It's a bad time to take it off just because
prices went up two months ago. Some are
still struggling out there. We need to carry
on for another year anyhow," he said.
Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath
agreed with Falconer, adding that "things
can go south in a hurry."
"We were leaders in this and we're
predominantly agricultural. It costs us a
little but I think it's a good thing," said
McGrath.
Mayor Joe Seili pointed out that the tax
deferral was meant to be a temporary
program aimed at sending a message to
the provincial and federal governments'
about the plight of farmers.
