ice for Vanastra curling program
Jennifer Hubbard
The Vanastra Curling Club will be
a happening place this winter, as
more than 100 curlers hit the rink.
Nearly 60 youth, aged five to 18
have joined the club's junior pro-
gram for the 2006-07 season.
"It's about the same as previous
years, fairly consistent," said volun-
teer Estella Higenell.
"We've had. some not come back,,
but then we've had quite a few new
ones trying out the sport and it's
kept our numbers steady."
The junior curlers are on the ice at
6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. every
Thursday night from November to
mid-March.
At least :two special events are in
the works for the 2006-07 junior
season.
On Jan. 27,. elementary students
from across southwestern Ontario
are invited to .participate in the
Vanastra club's annual elementary
bonspiel.,
Higenell said curlers don't have to
have a team to play.
"We just try to get as many kids
on the ice as possible. It's just a fun
day to: get kids out who may not reg-
ularly play in a bonspiel."
Long-time local junior curler Erin
Jamula will once again be organiz-
ing the Sandra Schmirler memorial
bonspiel. The 2007 fundraiser for
cancer research will be held on Feb.
17.
Participating curlers are encour-
aged to collect pledges for the
Sandra Schmirler Foundation.
Higenell said some of the club's
older junior curlers also compete at
the high school level.
Vanastra's adult curling member-
ship is thriving as well, at around
60, making the club's total close to
120.
Higenell attributed the .club's
ongoing success to a team of dedi-
cated volunteers.
Newcomers are always welcome.
"Just come on out and give it a
try," Higenell added. "It's a cheaper
alternative for a winter sport. All
you need is a pair of running shoes
and a broom."

Goals: Jacob Campbell, Jake Finlayson
Coaches' Comments: Despite coming up
short in two games, the team put forth great
efforts. Liam Melady and Gavin Campbell
played strong games in net, while receiving
strong defensive assistance from Josh
Robinson. Bradley Vincent, during his debut
on wing, was rewarded for his hard work with
his first goal of the season. If the team keeps
up the great passing and shooting, the goals
will come.
