Holiday camp expands into t

For the fourth consecutive year, a
hockey camp will be held at the
Seaforth arena over Christmas
break.
But, for the first time, the camp
will be held over two sessions, Dec.
27-29 and Jan. 2-4.
Organizer Kathy Huether says
since many minor hockey players
are occupied with tournaments over
the Christmas break, they wanted
to schedule a second session so that
more kids would be able to partici-
pate.
"There's so much going on around
• these times. Christmas week is dif-
ficult to get any level of commit-
ment," she says.
"I want there to be an opportunity
for all kids if they want to come out
and participate," Huether adds.
"I know we have the kids to fill
these positions."
Huether says they have around 25
kids registered so far (as of Dec. 15),
but she expects more to register in
the near future since she only began
handing out flyers and notifying
teams last week.
Last year the camp attracted
nearly 40 kids, and Huether says
she doesn't foresee any difficulties
in doubling those numbers since
they're offering a second session
where kids that couldn't otherwise
participate, will now have the
opportunity.
Like the previous three years,
Seaforth natives Mike McLaughlin,
of the St. Marys Lincolns and Luke
Vick, of the Clinton Radars, will be
lending a hand as instructors at
both sessions.
"They have been awesome," says
Huether of the two. "They've been
really good mentors to the kids.
They're positive and upbeat and
really bring a charisma to the
camp."
The camp, which runs each day
from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., is focussed for
kids between the ages .7-14.
Huether says once each session
begins, she will split the kids into
groups based on their skill levels.
She adds they have structured the
camp to include three hours of ice
time, followed by three hours of dry -
land training plus a lunch.
The main areas of focus are power
skating, stick handling and puck
control and shooting.
Also, McLaughlin and Vick will be
mons
talking to kids about the mental
and physical aspects of the game
and how to develop their bodies and
on -ice abilities as they get older.
Each three, -day session will
include eight hours on the ice and
four hours off of the ice.
As usual, notes Huether, it is diffi-
cult to judge where kids will come
from to participate in the camp.
In the past, kids from Brussels,
Exeter and Bayfield have filled the
camp, while there's been a very
small response from Seaforth kids,
says Huether.
However, "The kids that do come
always have a big smile," she adds.
The cost for a three-day session is
$75. Those interested in registering
can call (519) 527-1272.
