Bureau overwhelmed by donations
Su8atn
Hundermark
While fewer
Seaforth families reg-
istered for this year's
Christmas Bureau,
organizers are over-
whelmed by dona-
tions, which they say
is close to double last
year's givings.
"It's unbelievable. I
have to tell the world
how great Seaforth
people are. Boy, does
this put you in the
Christmas spirit,"
says organizer
Janneke Murray.
As of Friday, 42
families with 96 chil-
dren registered for
the bureau in
Seaforth, compared
to last year's num-
bers of 50 registered
families with 110
children.
Murray says many
of those registering
this year are a differ-
ent group from last
year.
"Some people are
getting back on their
feet this year and
bringing in dona-
tions. Everyone has
challenges at some
point or other," she
says.
Murray says dona-
tions are doubling
with food, something
she attributes in part
to the larger number
of donations at
the Santa Claus
parade. She adds
that leftover food
will be given to
the Seaforth and
District Food
Bank.
And, she says
the bureau is see-
ing large dona-
tions of a good
variety of good
quality toys and
gifts.
"One lady came
in with four bags
of toys and said
that she had no
. kids but wanted
to buy for kids,"
she says. "It's like
Walmart in our
(First
Presbyterian
Church's) base-
ment."
As well, cash
donations totalling
$3,000 have been
received with dona-
tions of.$500 from
both the Seaforth
Lions and Seaforth
Optimists.
"It's unreal for a
small town. We're
getting more than
some of the city
bureaus," says
Murray.
Murray says the
bureau is also receiv-
ing huge donations
from area schools and
many local business-
es are donating to the
Christmas Bureau
instead of exchanging
gifts among staff.
Because of the huge
numbers of donations
of toys, clothing and
food, Murray says the
bureau has been con-
sulting with local
clergy, schools and
homecare workers
looking for families in
need who didn't nec-
essarily register for
help.
"There will be other
packages going out to
a decent -sized list
we've got," says
Murray.
"I don't think any-
one in Seaforth is not
going to have a good
Christmas," she says.
Many Thanks
to 'all our
customers and
friends for their
patronage this
year. We wish
everyone a very
Merry Christmas
and all the best in
2007!
