Seaforth Medical Centre will have
a full-time ophthalmology practice
for the first time ever in the new
year.
Dr. Rick Bains, who currently
lives and practises in London, will
open a Seaforth practice on Feb. 1.
He has also been granted hospital
privileges at the four Huron -Perth
Healthcare Alliance hospitals in
Seaforth, Clinton, Stratford and St.
Marys and will do surgery at
Clinton Public Hospital.
"This is very exciting. This is one
of the biggest and best news items
I've been involved with for awhile,"
said Dick Burgess, chair of the
Seaforth Community Hospital Trust
and board member of the Alliance,
on Monday.
While the Allianceand the
Seaforth hospital have been actively
seeking more . physicians, Burgess
said recruiting a specialist who will
be centred in Seaforth is a "tremen-
dous bonus."
"I was present when he looked at
our facility and he was quite
impressed. He thought it would suit
him ideally," said Burgess, adding
that the time and money spent
making Seaforth's clinic more
attractive to doctors has contributed

Dr. Rick Bains
to Bains' recruitment.
In a phone interview, Bains said.
he chose a practice in Seaforth
because he sees it as being in the
centre of the Alliance region.
"It's a midway point between
Clinton and Stratford and it's got a
great little clinic with a layout per-
fect for, an eye clinic and the people
are great," he said.
With a cottage in Bayfield, Bains
said he plans to move at some point
from London to "somewhere on the
coast."
"It's going to be great," he said.
Bains said the region has 600
cataract surgeries a year and he
will be the second full-time oph-
thamology practice in Huron -Perth,
the other being Dr. Rob Walker in
Stratford.
Until now, the Huron -Perth region
was served by a group of London
doctors who travelled to Alliance
hospitals once a week.
As an ophthalmologist, Bains will
diagnose and treat age-related eye
diseases such as pre -macular degen-
eration, glaucoma and cataracts
with surgery and laser treatments.
"These services will contribute
significantly to an improvement in
the quality of life for the people of
Huron, especially as our population
ages," said Burgess.
The recruitment of Bains will
increase ophthalmologic services to
Huron County from two days to four
days a week.
