Spring election may not be in best
interest of party, says Steckle
From Page 26
"As federalists, we should have
stood together against Mr. Duceppe's
notion," Steckle said. "Sixteen
Liberals did not vote for that and I
was one of them."
However, he added that while the
government voted in favour of the
Bloc motion to recognize the
Quebecois, they stopped short of
granting that same status to the
province.
"The whole idea of nationhood and
what it means has yet to be deter-
mined," said the MP. "We need to
win Quebec and he's a faithful stal-
wart of the Liberal party," Steckle
said. "I think Canada will be well
served by Mr. Dion."
But can he unify the Liberal
party?
"If he can't, I don't think any of the
others could either," Steckle mused.
"We've had divided parties since the
Chretien and Martin days and I

think even the media recognized
some of these wounds have been
closed in a different way than the
past. I didn't see the bitterness that
I did in the Trudeau day when he
took the floor."
Steckle said there needs to be a
different approach to uniting the
Liberals than that of the `Unite the
Right' campaign under
Conservative Prime Minister
Stephen Harper.
"He's done it with an iron fist, but
that doesn't mean there is unity,"
noted Steckle. "We've whipped too
many votes."
As to the speculation of a spring
election, Steckle believes it may not
be in the best interests of either the
party or the constituents.
"We don't have to have elections
every time there is a poll that shows
we are in the lead." he said.
As for the clean-up after the lead-
ership election, Steckle recognized,

"There are going to be some wounds
of course, but wounds and time will
heal."
Overshadowed by the election was
the adoption of a new constitution
for the Liberal party, which accord-
ing to the party's Web site, www.lib-
eral.ca, "Creates a national member-
ship for the party, strengthens the
policy process, and puts increased
power in the hands of the party's rid-
ing associations."
A press release sent out by
Steckle's office Thursday highlighted
the need for a new Rural Affairs
Minister, the development of alter-
native energy and details on a
National Food Security Policy.
Whether or not these policies will
be implemented nationally remains
to be seen, but it is clear whose hand
will be holding the rubber stamp if
and when the time comes.
