Peacefully, following a courageous battle.with cancer, early Saturday morning, December 2, 2006 in his 78th year. Beloved uncle, devoted friend, mentor, caring physician, academic and sportsman, Don will be dearly missed. Born in 1929, Tuckersmith Township, Huron County to Ella Jane Charters Chesney and Robert Edwin MacKenzie, Don attended the one -room school house in Egmondville and moved on to 'Grades' at Seaforth Public School. The family moved to Toronto in 1940 where he briefly attended Brown's School before entering University of Toronto Schools (UTS) to excel at both academics and sports. He attended Victoria College and graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1954. Upon completion of post- graduate studies in Internal Medicine he returned to U. of T., and began an illustrious career that spanned five decades. As a physician at the U. of T. Health Service and professor with the Faculty of Physical Education and Health, Don was associated with excellence at the University. From carefree summer days as a child playing in the waves on the shores of Lake Huron, to paddling through Algonquin Park with campers in tow as Waterfront Director at Akmek, Don's passion was the water. It encompassed the Varsity Blues water polo and diving exploits throughout Ontario, the Atlantic and the Caribbean. He was a pioneer of Canada's diving community and one of the NAUI's first Canadian instructors. As one of the founders of the Hart House Underwater Club in 1962, he contributed to its success throughout his long tenure at U.of T. His career and his passion were delightfully balanced, Don enjoyed travel, music, nature, birding, food, wine and scuba diving. Later in life when tanks became cumbersome, Don continued to enjoy snorkeling in tropical waters where the abundant sunshine drew him back to the Caribbean time and time again. The Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Princess Margaret Hospital, the Shaw and Stratford Festivals all benefitted from his generosity. The University of Toronto adopted Don and he, in turn, adopted the University. He was instrumental in creating the Reception for Scholars, faculty of Physical Education and Health and has continued his support with the MacKenzie Scholarship. Throughout his full life Don befriended many and he was blessed with tremendous comfort from the frequent visitors with whom he shared his final days in hospital. A celebration of Don's life was held on Thursday, December 7, 2006, at Humbercrest United Church, 16 Baby Point Road, at 4:00 p.m. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Whitney-Ribey Funeral Home, Seaforth. 42- 50-1 The Huron 42.
