New Bridges residents already
making impact on community
Susan Hundertmark
With only a handful of couples
moved in so far to the Bridges of
Seaforth adult community develop-
ment, Main Street businesses and
Seaforth service groups and church-
es are already welcoming new cus-
tomers ' and new members.
Linda and John Chadwick, the
first couple to move to Bridges from
Pickering on July 29, are both from
small towns originally and have
found Seaforth to be "super friend-
ly" so far.
"We got involved golfing right
away and I went to Vanastra for
aquafit classes," says Linda.
She also joined St. James Catholic
Church and the Catholic Women's
League (CWL) there.
"John used to be in the air force so
we'll probably join the Legion," says
Linda.
And, while she's a retired regis-
tered nurse and aware of the
recruiting difficulties in rural areas
of healthcare professionals, she says
she's not planning. to go back to
work. -
"The only thing that concerns us
is not having a doctor here but we
are on the list for the new family
health team," she says, adding that
she and her husband still travel
back to Scarborough to a family doc-
tor..
Because -John used to own a golf
store, the couple is aware of the
need to support local business and
they do all of their grocery shopping
in town.

Donelda Davis sings with the choir of First Presbyterian Church where she as
joined as a member of the congregation since moving to the Bridges' development.
"We are all for supporting local
people," she says.
Jim and Donelda Davis moved to
Bridges Aug. 2 from Port Elgin.
"My hometown is Stratford so it's
like coming back to my roots," says
Jim, who left Stratford in 1951 to
join the air force.
"It's nice to live in a quiet place.
It's less hectic and less traffic," he
says.
The Davises
have already
joined the
Seaforth Legion
and Donelda has
joined First
Presbyterian
Church and its
choir.
In the spring,
they plan to join
the Seaforth
Lawn Bowling
Club.
"I know
there's a very
good bowling
green here,"
says Donelda,
adding that she
and her hus-
band used to
bowl in
Southampton.
The Davises
say they come

every day to either buy groceries,
rent a video, . get their hair cut or
just take a look at the shops.
"We find it really friendly," says
Donelda.
"We're not going to hibernate here
at Bridges. We're going to use the ,
town and whatever it has to offer,"
says Jim.
Avid ice skaters, the 'Davises are
hoping the Seaforth arena will
begin to offer a seniors' skating time
once a week.
Liz and Hugh Bracken moved to
the Bridges from Manitoulin Island
because they wanted to be closer to
family members in Orangeville.
They spent the summer camping
at Family Paradise while waiting
for their move -in date of Aug. 31.
"We're not city types. We like the
small town," says Liz. "My husband
goes into town every morning to get
his newspaper." '
Already a Lions Club member for
30 years, Hugh has been to several
meetings of the Seaforth Lions Club
and the couple has joined Rob's
Gym.
The Brackens have also enjoyed
travelling throughout southwestern
Ontario over the past few months to
Stratford, Blyth and Grand Bend.
"I'm sure we'll enjoy the communi-
ty. We're used to making new
friends," she says.
