Landowners near sinkholes
invited to learn about funding
for environmental projects
Susan H u n d e r t m a r k
Landowners near sinkholes in both Huron
East and West Perth are being encouraged to
create environmental farm plans to take
advantage of as many as 36 funding opportu-
nities for clean water projects.
Organized by the Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority (ABCA), the meetings
- one held on Tuesday and another held Dec.
19 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Hibbert
Church Hall in Staffa. - will help landowners
complete a self-assessment of their property
which they can then use to apply for up to 50
per cent in funding for various projects.
"It's not just for people with sinkholes on
their land. If you are in the area, you have
the potential - since sinkholes-. provide a link
with groundwater in the area - to contami-
nate the groundwater in the urea," says Hope
Brock, ABCA water resource. technician.
"It's a sensitive area and we want to make
sure the groundwater is as clean as possible,"
she says.
While 10 landowners have signed up for the
sessions so far, 40 invitations were sent out to
people living near four sinkhole clusters in
Tuckersmith, Chiselhurst, Hibbert and Line
21.
Because both manure and fertilizer can con-
taminate groundwater by travelling through
sinkholes, the environmental farm plan will
determine the beneficial management prac-
tices, necessary to prevent contamination.
Projects that could be beneficial include
upgrading or decommissioning a weli, planti-
ng buffers and berms around sinkholes and
installing eavestroughs that will lead rainwa-
ter away from manure storage.
The amount of funding available will
depend on the project deemed as necessary.
Mary McIntosh, who will be facilitating the
meeting, says the environmental farm plan
will look at sections pertaining to the storage
of manure and fuel, septic systems and milk -
houses and the spread of manure and pesti-
cides during cropping.
It will give you a snapshot of where you're
at with a surface and groundwater assess-
ment with financial assistance if we identify
problems," McIntosh says.
"If you don't come, you won't know the fund-
ing that's available," she says.
McIntosh says once landowners complete
their self-assessment, their plan will go to a
peer review committee before funding is
granted.
"It's farmer -driven and voluntary," she says.

Celebrating Agriculture in Huron
County allows visitors to examine
tools of the trade and the results of
the labour from planting to harvest.
Visit the museum in December to
view an additional display on loan
from the Archives Association of
Ontario, a display of artifacts donat-
ed by Centralia College of
Agricultural Technology when it
closed, and items from International
Plowing matches held in Huron
County through the years.

public during regular museum
hours.
School and youth groups are also
invited to Christmas in the County,
a seasonal education program at the
Huron County Museum.
