Seaforth family health team
proposes farm stress program
Susan Hundertmark
Huron County farmers will have another
place to go for support if a proposal by the
Seaforth family health team (FHT) is funded.
A farm stress program has been proposed
by the Seaforth FHT, which has applied for
$25,000 in funding from the Farm Credit
Corporation's Agri -Spirit fund.
"While commodity prices have
adjusted somewhat, there's still
a lot of concern in the agricultur-
al community it's real," says
Gwen Devereaux, physician
recruiter for Huron and Perth
Counties and a member of the
Seaforth FHT steering commit-
tee.
"And, if farmers don't have
access to primary care, it puts'
them in a more desperate situa-
tion," she says.
The proposed project would
bring farmers together at the
Brussels health clinic to discuss
what sort of support they could
use, provide one-on-one coun-
selling and give them a place to
access mental health services
that are already available - such
as the Farm Line and the Stress and
Financial Counselling out of Clinton's
OMAFRA office.
As well, the project would train healthcare
workers about the stresses facing the farm
community.
"Our thought is to offer service before
they're (farm families are) in crisis," says
Devereaux, adding that in countries like
Australia, suicide numbers are increasing
among farmers in financial crisis.
Since a family physician is the first contact
farmers and their families have for health;
care, the large number of orphan patients in
the area might not be receiving the help they
need.
"We hope this is where the family health
team can play a part," says Devereaux.
Hoping to hear soon whether the funding
will be approved, Devereaux says she expects
to hold more meetings with farmers over the
winter about the farm stress' pro-
gram.
The Seaforth FHT has also
applied to the Ministry of Health
for $119,000 in funding for a pro-
fessional mentorship, coaching
and leadership program that will
help coordinate the healthcare
professionals who come together
to form the FHT.
Devereaux says the project will
include software on electronic
recordkeeping that is designed
for family health teams and
workshops for
nurses, phar-
macists and
other allied
healthcare
professionals.
As well, the
project would
invite medical students
and residents to see the
team in operation to pro-
mote mentorship.
Devereaux - says the
Seaforth FHT proposal for
medical professionals
should learn whether it's
been approved sometime
in March.
