Opinion
Taxpayers need to be more
vocal about tax abuses
To the Editor,
Ontario's former highest-paid
public servant just got a raise.
After raking in a modest salary of
$1.56 million last year, former
president and CEO of Hydro One,
Tom Parkinson was put in the
spotlight after a "-critical auditor
general's report," involving
45,000 in expenses improperly
charged to his secretary's corpo-
rate credit card and another $127
million in credit card purchases
without proper receipts.
After resigning last week,
Parkinson will be receiving a $3
million. severance package
for...quitting? I hope I'm not the
only one confused about this
essential point, because I always
thought you had to be fired to
receive severance pay.
However,. Energy Minister
Dwight Duncan is apparently in
the spirit of giving, reaching fur-
ther into the pockets of Ontario
taxpayers to give Parkinson a pay-
out he isn't even entitled to
receive. I would just like to ask
what type of message this is send-
ing taxpayers?
This isn't the first time the posi-
tion has allegedly been abused;
the predecessor to Parkinson,
Eleanor Clitheroe, has launched a
$30 million wrongful dismissal
lawsuit after being fired in 2002
amid controversy over lavish
spending and a $2.2 million
salary.
As taxpayers, we need to become
vocal about this kind of blatant
misuse of our tax dollars. We put a
certain amount of trust into pub-
lic servants, and this trust should
be respected, not abused.

Remember this rhyme
to helpprevent crime
this festive Yule time
To the Editor,
You'd better watch out!
A few weeks before Christmas, we
bring you advice
There are people around that are
not very nice!
They are out on the prowl for a
quick easy score
o please be aware of who's at your
door.
They can walk past your window
and take just one glance
Size up your gifts and take that big
chance
Through an unlocked front door, or
a window out back,
They'll come into your house and
fill up their sack.
They'll be gone in one minute, they
move very fast
Your house wasn't the first and it
won't be the last.
So we offer some tips to help stamp
out this crime
And to help you remember, .we've
made them all rhyme.
Out for the night, so leave on a
light
Or a radio on, they won't know
you've gone
Lock the good deadbolt, you've
installed on the door
This item alone could stop a crook's
score.
Remember; don't show off those
presents you've bought,
Keep drapes tightly- closed, or it
might be for naught.

Shutters, gables and a covered veranda give
this eye-catching four-bedroom home a touch
of Edwardian charm. The arresting exterior is
enhanced by the double garage, which follows
the design of the house 'in its details. The
formal living and dining rooms are ideal for
entertaining family and friends. Also designed
to make dinner parties as easy as possible is
the butler's pantry between the dining room
and the kitchen, which will minimize any
difficulties associated with serving multi -
course meals to a crowd.

Dion who?
From Page 4
The exact same issue
forced Michaelle Jean
to give up her French
citizenship before
becoming Governor
General of Canada.
So, you may be prais-
ing Stephane Dion
already, or cursing him
to the high heavens,
but it's still his name
you'll be saying when
doing so.
And, in today's world
of unenlightened vot-
ers, that just might be
all Dion needs come the
next federal election.
