GreenField Ethanol will
soon be fueling Huron
County's economy.
Dozens of area politicians
and business leaders gath-
ered at the site's home -to -be,
adjacent to the Hensall
District Co-operative Inc.,
Monday morning for an offi-
cial sod -turning ceremony to
mark the beginning of con-
struction for the $150 -mil-
-lion facility.
Bliss Baker, vice-president
of corporate affairs for
GreenField Ethanol, says
the project, which is expect-
ed to create up to 50 full-
time jobs, is moving forward
thanks to several "local
heroes" who championed the
cause, most notably Huron -
Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell.
Baker says a combination
of a welcoming municipality,
an abundance of area corn
and close proximity to the
Co-op made for the perfect
recipe to create an ethanol -
production facility where
farmland now stands.
Baker, too, gave kudos to
the provincial government
for introducing legislation
that all gasoline sold in
Ontario contain an average
of five per cent ethanol by
2.007.
That figure will double to
a 10 per cent average by
2010.
He says the plant will be
using corn from Huron and
throughout the province.
"We now have growers
across the province signing
up with us," he says.
He says the federal gov-
ernment's stated plan to
launch a renewable fuel pro-
gram is another boon to the
business.
"It's great news for our
industry," he says.
In introducing a spate of
guest speakers, Baker first
called upon Huron -Bruce's
MPP.
"I can honestly say we're
in Hensall today because of
Carol," he says, adding
when Mitchell got word of
the proposal, she had him
"in a headlock and hasn't let
go since."
Huron -Bruce's MPP says
the provincial Liberal gov-
ernment has allocated $520
million to move forward
with ethanol -based endeav-
ours and that an ethanol
plant seemed like a natural
fit for Huron County.
"What do we produce?
What are we known for?
Corn," she says, adding
she'd ideally like to see
Toronto buses carrying plac-
ards that promote the fact
farmers are making cleaner
air possible in the province.
Mitchell adds this project
is a most welcome one in
agricultural -rich Huron
County.
"You have no idea what
this means to me," she says.
She says though farmers
still face difficult times, the
introduction of the plant is a
step in the right direction.
She adds -it is her hope to
plant

will continue to rise.
Steckle also paid tribute
to Mitchell, the Co-op and
GreenField Ethanol.
"We're going to see the
realization of a dream," he
says.
Bill Dowson, mayor of the
Municipality of Bluewater,
says the plant will benefit
area the entire region.
"It's going to be good for
our municipality, it's going
to be good for -the county
and some of the surrounding
counties," says Dowson, who
