While the Seaforth Figure Skating Club is still drawing plenty of kids each season, club president Tracy Schelken says the club is finding it increasingly difficult to attract kids to pursue competitive skating. "The numbers (for the competitive side) have been going down over the last couple of years," she says, adding that the same thing is hap- pening across the province, not just in Seaforth. This is at the same time Skate Canada is continuing to push clubs to focus more on competitive skat- ing. The problem is, says Schelken, any parents use the figure skat- club as skating lessons for their kids. "They will put their kids into the CanSkate program, where they'll get the basic skills before taking them out and putting them in hock- ey or ringette," he says. However, notes Schelken, there are seven kids from this year's club, which has 52 members, that are training for competitive figure skat- ing. "Out of our seven, I'm sure all seven will compete," she says, not- ing tournaments in Stratford in February and Cambridge in March as likely tournaments they will enter.
