Imagination added to reality creates books: Kropp
Susan Hundertmark
Take some reality, add a
little imagination and the
next thing you know, you'll
be writing a book, children's
author Paul Kropp told stu-
dents at Seaforth Public
School on Wednesday.
Handing out three of his
50 published books to
Grades 4-6, Kropp explained
how he came up with the
ideas for the plots of each
book.
In Shooting the Rapids, he
told students his experience
white water rafting had
given him the knowledge he
needed to describe what it's
like. -
"But, the fact that our
heroes may or may not live
through it on the 'bus-
cruncher rapids' is what
makes it exciting," he said.
In Ghost House, Kropp
tells the story of four boys,
two of them brothers, who
spend time in a. haunted
house.
"I happen to be an older
brother who's scared to
death of most things so I ,
can tell this story. My
younger brother had a col-
lection of pickled spiders he
used to threaten to throw at
me. Guess who takes the
most punishment in this
book? Me!" he said.
One Stormy Night is a
book set - in
Saskatchewan about a
teen working at a gas
station where one night,
everything that could go
wrong, does.
"It's a book for every-
one who watches Corner
Gas," he said.
Kropp then demon-
strated how to add
imagination to reality
by asking several stu-
dents to act out one of
his stories.
As the author of
everything from picture.
books to_ novels for
young adults, Kropp

said he's combatted writer's
block by spending lots of
time in the shower.
"Ionization takes place,
electrons go sailing into
your brain and it works bet-
ter. This is science," he. said.
"How do you write 50
books and not get stuck?
Everyone gets stuck but I
don't panic. I take a shower.
I have two hot water
heaters in my house," .he
said.
Kropp, who spent the
afternoon teaching Avon
Maitland teachers how to
inspire children to become
better writers, also gave a
talk to parents in Stratford
about the importance of
reading.
Along with his novels, he's
written texts including The
Write Genre, How to Make
Your Child a Reader for Life
and I'll be the the Parent,
You be the Kid.
