Seniors can be counted on to hit the polls election day

While getting young
Canadians to participate in
any election is proving to be
a difficult task, Canada's
seniors can still be counted
on to hit the polis come elec-
tion day.
Even most of-Seaforth's
seniors living in nursing
and retirement homes will
be sure to place their votes
as well.
Kathy Schalk, site admin-
istrator at the Seaforth
Manor says she's overheard
many of the residents dis-
cussing the upcoming
municipal election' some
even sporting pins for cer-
tain candidates.
"If they were involved.
when they were living in
their own homes, they con-
tinue to be involved (now),"
says Schalk, adding that
since there appears to be an
interest on the issues facing
this year's municipal elec-
tion, she hopes to have may-
oralty candidates Joe Seili
and Lou Maloney visit the
Manor. •
"That's when you really
have a chance to hear the
issues and what their inten-
tions are," she says, noting
that residents will not have
to travel far to cast their
vote, since the
municipality
brings a polling
station right to
them.
Schalk says it
doesn't surprise
her that most of
the residents, of
which she
expects around
75 of her 88 to
cast a vote, still
'feel it is their
responsibility to
vote.
"It's no longer
deemed a privi-
lege (by today's
generation),
especially for
women," she
says.
"We have

for Maplewood Manor who they should vote for,"
Kathy Binnendyk says she says Binnendyk, adding
that for the most part the
residents spend their time
talking about the individual
candidate's personality,
rather than about the issues
facing the election.
She adds that many of her
residents are also wearing
pins.
The largest difference
Binnendyk says she has
noticed with her residents
over past elections is that

they c`lo not discuss who
they voted for.
"It is very personal. They
like to keep it to them=
selves," she says, adding
that since many of them
cannot leave on their own,
the residents appreciate
having a polling station set
up at the Manor.
"It makes them feel like
they're still part of the com-
munity," she says.
