Brussels library, industrial park
issues raised at all -candidates meeting
Jeff. Heuchert
.11.11111.11.
The question of whether to reno-
vate and build onto the existing
library in Brussels, or build an
entirely new one, was discussed by
several candidates at the Brussels
all -candidates meeting Oct. 26.
"The Brussels library has to be
more accessible," noted incumbent
Huron East mayor Joe Seili to the
nearly 40 in attendance for the
meeting at the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre.
Seili added the municipality has
purchased some property within a
block of the current library, which
they will take possession of in
January, where they might look into
building a new library if they find
there is not enough room to add on
to the current building.
"We'll get back to you once we
have some costs," he added.
One of three candidates running
for the two position of Brussels
ward incumbent David Blaney said
Huron East would hold another
meeting, open to the pub-
lic, before any final deci-
sion was made on the
library.
"We want to have a
library we can be proud
of for 50 years, not one
it takes 50 years to pay
off," added Blaney, who
took time during his
speech to also note his
hopes for . a second
industrial park for
Brussels.
"We don't have mil-
lions of dollars to
attract plants, but the
Brussels industrial
park is full," he said.
"It's time to build a
second industrial park,"
Blaney added, noting
that two
possible locations
could be the old
fair -grounds or a
cornfield located
west of the cur-
rent- industrial
park.
He added he
would like to see
Huron East look
into trying to
revitalize
Brussels' down-
town core, noting
that its side-
walks need to be
completely
redone.
The second of
Brussels ward
hopefuls incum-
bent Frank
Stretton said it
will be key in the
upcoming future
for Huron East
to support economic development in
Brussels.
Stretton was the only candidate to
make note of a proposed
beef packing plant for
Brussels, saying
Huron East should
continue to work for
one.
He also made note of
recent upgrades that
were installed at the
Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community
Centre, including a
new roof and lights,
adding Huron East
will soon have to also
look at the building's
cooling system.
"Our (Huron East's)
buildings are getting
to that point where
we're going to have to
look at these kinds of
have a I racy
we can be
3roud of for 50
years, not one
it takes 50
years to pay

things and it's going to be
a challenge for council," in terms of
fitting work into the budget, he
said.
"I'm not going to (support) auto-
matically raising taxes. We're going
to have to prioritize and plan ahead.
I support progress, but progress
within our means. We need to have
a balanced approach," he added.
The third candidate for Brussels
ward John Harrison commended
Huron East council for their work in
providing services to Brussels.
"We have to ensure we keep our
services and not raise taxes to do
so," he said.
"I'd love to help and I would like to
help as a councillor," he added.
Mayoralty candidate Lou Maloney
also said he was pleased with
Brussels' representation in Huron
East.
"The' only thing I can promise is
more of the same. I'm retired and
ready to devote all my time to being
your mayor," he added.
