News Missed meetings, daycare and rec centre discussed at Vanastra all -candidates .meeting Susan Hundertmark While he admitted to missing 20 out of 108 scheduled county council meetings during his three-year term as Huron East mayor, Joe Seili said he's also attended up to 12 func- tions in one week representing the municipal- ity. The issue of meeting attendance came up at the all -candidates meeting in Vanastra last Wednesday when the two mayoralty candi- dates, incumbent Joe Seili and Seaforth Coun. Lou Maloney presented their qualifica- tions in the race. for the position of Huron East's mayor. Tuckersmith's two representatives, Larry McGrath and Les Falconer have been acclaimed to the positions. "I think the mayor should be a full-time position. How detrimental is it if you can't get to every meeting?" asked Tuckersmith ratepayer Maureen Agar. Seili said that he and Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan try to coordinate their schedules so that someone from Huron East represents the municipality at county council meetings. "In three years, I• doubt if there wasn't a representative from Huron East more than three times," he said. Neither the mayor's nor the deputy -mayor's positions are full-time jobs in Huron East and no one else on Huron East council is allowed to fill in for them if they can't make it to Huron County council. "To go to every meeting, you probably couldn't even if you were a full-time mayor," said Seili. He added that his absences involved a fami- ly holiday, illness and family issues. "I always put my family first, Huron East second and the county third," he said. "On the up side, if I don't go, I don't get paid so I've left $5,000 in the taxpayers' pocket. If I wrote down everything I went and billed you, it would be a full-time job," said Seili. Maloney, who also raised the issue of Seili's attendance at county council in his election pamphlet, said he's missed one meeting of Huron East council because he was ill with the flu. "I don't like missing meetings but if I'm mayor, I'll be at all of the meetings if I can," he said. Seili told ratepayers he's happy with the "great job" the Tuckersmith Day Nursery staff has done reducing the daycare's deficit. "They surpassed the goal we set for them," he said. Seili also highlighted the completion of the Vanastra gates reconstruction, the farmland, tax deferral bylaw and the proposed Brussels beef plant as accomplishments of council that he is proud of. "We need much more industrial land. That's where we're going to see our growth.. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail," said Seili. Maloney said he notices that all of Huron East's five wards need to do more tree trim- ming and that Vanastra needs some sidewalk repair. Maloney also said he'd like to see council keep the Vanastra Recreation Centre in good repair with a reserve fund to pay for whatev- er upgrades are necessary. "I'd like to see if we couldn't enlarge the exercise room - that's the only complaint I've heard about the facility," he said. "The taxpayers I've heard from don't want a new facility and I agree with them," said Maloney. Both Maloney and Seili agreed they want to give Egmondville residents a chance to decide if they want to join Seaforth's sewage system after a $7,000 study deter- mines the approximate cost per resident.
