Mitchell letter responded to
e -postcard, not Highway 8
complaint, says assistant

A letter from Huron -Bruce MPP Carol
Mitchell to Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler was in
response to an e -postcard Steffler had sent
her regarding the shape of Ontario's roads,
not his specific concerns about Highway 8,
says Mitchell's assistant Brian McBurney.
Steffler took the letter, dated Sept. 27, 2006,
from Mitchell to council on Oct. 17, saying he
was baffled since council hadn't raised the
issue until Oct. 3 of the bad shape of Highway
8 between the towns of Seaforth and Mitchell.
McBurney said the letter was not in
response to council's concern about Highway
8.
"We're good but we can't reply a week
before an issue comes up," said McBurney.
Steffler had sent an e -postcard from
www worstroads.ca to the Huron -Bruce MPP
asking for a permanent share of gas tax rev-
enue for road and bridge repair.
"Local governments are responsible for
about 90 per cent of Ontario roads. But, the
province collects most of the motoring -related
taxes needed to keep those roads safe," said
the e -postcard.
"The province already committed about 14.
per cent of gas tax revenue to urban transit
projects. Surely at least that much can be
dedicated to local road improvements as
well," it continued.
Steffler said he remembered sending the e -
postcard but disputed whether you could call
the e-mail a letter.
"It was a Mickey Mouse thing you click on
and they probably received a lot of those," he
said.
Steffler said he took Mitchell's letter to
council to get its support in the fight for
improvements to Highway 8.
"We deserve a better Highway 8 and all I'm
trying to do is get it out to the public. You
have to put politicial pressure on these guys,"
he said.
"I'm not asking for the sky. All I'm asking
for is a date they're fixing the highway," said
Steffler.
McBurney said that both Mitchell and
Perth -Middlesex MPP John Wilkinson under-
stand that Highway 8 is a provincial highway.
A letter, dated Oct. 12, 2006, was recently
sent to Huron East council from Mitchell re:
provincial highways in Huron County.
"Since I travel many of these highways
myself, . I find out first hand what state they
are in. I will work with your municipality, the
county, etc: to see that some improvements
are: made to our local provincial highways,"
said the letter.
