Seaforth church encouraging community
to tieribbons for Remembrance Day
Susan Hnndertmark
Driving recently through Sarnia
where the city was bedecked with
yellow ribbons to recognize the
death of a Point Edward
soldier in Afghanistan,
Dale Ann McKichan
brought the idea back
to her church, First
Presbyterian Church
in Seaforth.
And, with large yel-
low bows and ribbons
on three trees in front
of the church, the con-
gregation is being
encouraged to remem-
ber Canadian soldiers
- both veterans and
those currently serv-
ing - this
Remembrance Day.
"There's no one we're
aware of in the service
from Seaforth right
now but does it mat-
ter?" McKichan says.
"It would be wonder-
ful to have yellow rib-
bons all along Highway 8
and maybe some family member
who has a loved one in Afghanistan
will see it," she says.
Pointing out that Seaforth put up
yellow ribbons during the Gulf War
in 1991, McKichan says the ribbons
are a good way to begin conversa-
tions about war and freedom.
"None of us but the veterans that
are left can remember
what war was like and
it makes me wonder
would I ever be able to
survive what they did,"
she says. "We don't
think enough about the
privileges and freedoms
we have because veter-
ans fought for them."
She says the First
Presbyterian Sunday
School will be talking
about war and
Christmas cards will be
handed out to the con-
gregation that will be
sent to the soldiers in
Afghanistan.
"Tying a yellow rib-
bon around a tree is a
simple thing to remem-
ber soldiers from
Canada fighting for
freedom in another coun-
try. This doesn't have to be political
- it's just supporting the troops," she
says.
It would be
wonderful to
have yellow
ribbons all
along Highway
8 and maybe
some family
member who
has a loved one
in Afghanistan
will see it ,'-.—
