"Three things must happen under the Emergency Management Act. We need to develop a plan, educate the public and perform trainings or tabletop exercises," he explained. "We want to get the message out the best we can. We've tried this way, it wasn't as successful as we'd like, so we'll try something else." Participants in the Oct. 19 semi- nar at the Huron County Health Unit in Clinton were encouraged to consider the risks their family is most likely to face and how each one may affect them. An emergency pre- paredness guide — available at www.safe- canada.ca or through the health unit — offers a basic checklist that can be used to create a customized family emergency plan, public health nurse Donna Parsons said. "We focus on four steps: prepare, plan, practise and stay informed," she explained. "It's impor- tant when creating your plan to use a step- by-step approach so Seatbelt laws need a second look From Page 4 Statistics do show that children are eight times safer travelling in a school bus rather than a car. But, as I was always told growing up, it's better to be safe than sorry. Let's not wait for our own tragedy before we take another look at our seatbelt laws. that you don't feel overwhelmed. A solid plan your family under- stands will help keep you safe in an emergency" An emer- gency kit — including med- ical supplies, flashlights, spare batteries, copies of impor- tant papers, clothing, blan- kets, contact numbers and personal items — is an impor- tant part of that plan, Parsons added. She also encouraged families to have a minimum three-day supply of food and water for all people and pets in their household, on -hand in case of an emer- gency. "Whenever you hear of a pandemic or emergency in your communi- ty, it brings in a fear and anxi- ety of the unknown. One of the . best defences against the unknown is to plan ahead," Parsons said. The seminar also included a discussion on pandemic versus epidemic influenza. A pandemic is defined as a "worldwide outbreak," while an epidemic is "an outbreak a fear and anxiety of the unknown. One of the best defences against the unknown is to plan ahead,' -- Public Health Nurse Donna Parsons in a certain area." "A pandemic influenza would be a new strain that no one had been exposed to. Worldwide pandemics could go any where, any season," Parsons explained. Parsons encouraged anyone with questions about creating their own emergency plan to contact her at (519) 482-3416. Huron representatives — including hospitals, doctors, long-term care facilities, the Community Care Access Centre of Huron and county employees — attended a similar emergency management planning day -long seminar at the health unit on Friday. "We come together as a group to formulate a plan as to how we are going to work together in the, event of an emergency," Wood explained. L'YOUR RENOVATION AND HOME SPECIALISTS!
