for the

Party, Dave
Joslin has
thrown his
name into a
four-way con-
test to repre-
sent Grey
ward on
Huron East
council.
"People have
told me they could use
someone of my philosophy
and urged me to run so I
thought, `I guess . I
should,'" he says.
Describing himself as a.
"small c" Conservative,.
Joslin says he's against
any movement towards
a one -tier government
at the county level.
He also wants to see
Huron East run "as
efficiently as possible"
with good infrastruc-
ture, fire services, snow
removal and police ser-
vices.
"My impression is
that there's not a lot of
fat. We've done better
than a lot of other
municipalities with
amalgamation and I
want to make sure it
stays that way," says
Joslin.
Joslin says he'd like
to see the municipality
forgo property taxes
and basic service costs
to make it more attrac-
tive to businesses that
might want to locate in
Huron East.
"We need jobs for
young people," he says.
While Joslin says he
is pro de -amalgamation
for Grey, he doesn't
think the province will
allow it.

says.
Joslin adds
that he hopes
municipal
politicians:.
have learned
from amalga-
'nation to
oppose any moves by the
province to institute a one -
tier system.
"I would hope we'd dig
in our heels and say no,"
he says.

Newman wants to keep taxes
down and attract industry
Because he likes helping peo-
ple "get what they need," Dale
Newman would like to return to
municipal politics as a repre-
sentative of Grey ward on
Huron East council.
Newman was a Grey council-
lor for three years before Grey
Zbwnship joined Huron East.
"I miss it (municipal politics).
There's a lot we can do," he
says.
Newmanays he attended a
number of meetings regarding
de -amalgamation in Grey and
while he's not certain de -amal-
gamation is the best route for
Grey, he says he'd like to see
the province allow it for the municipalities
who want it.
"I don't think we'd be better off on our
own. We need to work with the partners
we've got to make things work for the best.
But, people have a right to look at it (de -
amalgamation)," he says.
If elected, Newman says he wants to keep
taxes down, "not rising at the same rate as

in the last six or seven years."
And, he says he doesn't want
to see taxes invested in industry
like the proposed beef plant.
"I'm against putting tax
money into the killing plant.
Money should be raised by the
people who want to invest in it.
Business should be left to the
private sector to run," he says,
adding that Huron East will
have wasted $35,000 in seed
money if the beef plant doesn't
get built.
Newman says he's in favour
of attracting industry to the
area by using tax incentives
and forgoing building permits.
