Call our newsroom at 527-0240 Team of Legion golfers from Seaforth win provincial tournament Jeff Heuchert After having. come close in four previous attempts, the Seaforth duo of Kevin Bennett and Mike Marion finally won the Legion provincial golf tournament. Held at the Club de Golf Nation in Curran, just outside of Ottawa over the Sept. 16-17 weekend, the tournament hosted roughly 150 golfers from Legion branches across the province. To qualify for the • provincials, Bennett and Marion Marion competed at the zone and district lev- els, in June and July. "Getting 'to the provincials is not tough for us, it's getting out that's difficult. We were always getting to the provincials and then getting beat out by the. top three or four," recalls Marion, in a recent interview with Marion at the Seaforth Golf and- Country Club, where both men are active members. During their down time, Bennett and Marion took in some sights in Ottawa, includ- ing the Parliament Buildings, embassies, and the Rideau Canal. "It was my first time being in Ottawa. It was a very beautiful city," notes Bennett. Both men agree that over the years the com- petition has improved at the Legion golf tour- naments. They say it's because the Legion began allowing younger golfers to join, after strug- gling to fill teams, adding that, at one time each team had four golfers. "We're seeing these young guys hit it t (the ball) a mile," says Marion, adding that stiffer competition only makes for a better tourna- ment. "We just out jousted them this year," he adds. "You have to play good to ,win this," notes Bennett. "This is not something that is -hand- ed to you." Marion says they feel . the reason they won this year is because they played a practice round prior to the tournament, where they got a good feel for the course. "It was one of those courses where you have to see it beforehand. It made all of the difference in the world," he adds. While the victory was a first for Marion, Bennett had tasted victory once before, in 2001, when he won the provincial tournament while playing with Marion's son Chris. "Since then, we've seen this as a mission," says Bennett, adding that they also had an additional motiva- tion to winning this year. Each year the tournament's win- ners gets to host the following year's event in their Legion branch's hometown. ALBERT CLINIC Denture Specialist Dean R.
