Huron Expositor, 2006-09-06, Page 23News. Flu vaccines d - - until mid-November due to rare strain The Huron Expositor • September 6, 2006 Page 23 Jeff Heuchert Those wanting to get their flu shots this fall will have to wait a little bit longer. A press release issued by the Huron County Health Unit last week says the flu vaccine is taking longer than usual to produce, but that it should arrive and be available by mid-November. Public health nurse Christina Taylor explains that a fill, vaccine is made from three flu virus strains. One of those strains this year - the Wisconsin strain, has been uncommon in North America up to this point. And as a result, the strain is taking longer to mass pro- duce, says Taylor. "Once the vaccine arrives, it will be distributed as quickly as possible so area residents can get their shots," the press release states. The delay on the vaccine could raise some concerns for those planning to travel south prier to mid- November. Taylor says she is not aware of what vaccine is available in the U.S., but that it would be different than what will be available here. She adds that until the vaccines are made available, there. are ways for people to strengthen their immune system. "Good hand -washing, .get- ting plenty of sleep and eat- ing a healthy diet also help maintain a healthy immune system and prevent infec- tion," states the press release. Taylor explains that the flu virus is. constantly changing and varies depending on what it comes in contact with each year, which would make it ineffec- tive if it was to be used again this year. * Agricultural * Residential * Commercial * Pole Line Construction ELECTRIC R.R. #4 Seaforth, Ont.
