Education Minister Sandra Pupatello congratulates Cal Marcy for his school's excellence - and for
coming to school during the week before summer vacation ends - during a visit to St. James
School in Seaforth last Friday.
St. James School recognized as
`lighthouse' school in Ontario
Susan Hundertmark
Because of its high achievement in both
literacy and numeracy in EQrAO testing,
St. James School in Seaforth has been
chosen as a "school on the move" by the
province.
"You guys are doing extremely, well on
the student achievement front," St. James
staff, students and parents were told by
Education Minister Sandra Pupatello as
she visited the school last Friday.
Her praises were echoed by Huron Perth
District Catholic School Board education
director Larry Langan who said, "We are
so proud of this school and the students.
They have risen to the challenge. This
school is a hardworking group of people."
As one of the first group of "lighthouse"
schools in the new provincial "Schools on
the Move" program, St. James will be the
site of a number of visits during the
coming school year from schools
throughout Ontario with a similar size
and characteristics.
"There will probably be three or four
scheduled visits in the fall 'and three or
four in the spring term for schools to have
an opportunity to learn and create a
professional dialogue," said
superintendent Martha Dutrizac.
Dutrizac said St. James was chosen as a
"lighthouse school" because it has already
surpassed provincial goals to have 75 per
cent of students achieving the provincial
average in standardized tests.
As well, the achievement on EQAO
testing has shown improvements at St.
James over the past five years.

hours before her father's funeral.
The two -vehicle collision at

about 8 a.m. also killed a young

faTing since he was a boy.
" ere in the rural areas, it
seems like an atomic bomb," Rev.
Mark Poulin of St. Patrick's
Roman Catholic Church in Dublin
said of the loss. "It devastates out
to where everybody is talking
about it and everybody is affected
by it in some way."
None of the victims was .wearing
a seatbelt, police said.
Perth County OPP said Alfred
Chappel, 55, of Hibbert Ward and
his eight-year-old son William
were a little more than a kilometre
from their home when their
southbound van failed to stop at
the intersection near Staffa, about
30 kilometres northwest of
Stratford.
The van collided with an
eastbound pickup truck driven by
23 -year-old Gregory Van Loon of
Dublin.
Both vehicles ended up in a field
at the southeast corner of the
intersection. All three people were
pronounced dead at the scene,
police said.
Police seized the van to conduct
