Huron Expositor, 2006-08-16, Page 24OPP increase
bicycle
enforcement
OPP officers will be out increas-
ing bicycle enforcement in the
community of Huron County.
Const. Jeff Walraven of Huron
OPP states "The OPP has used
positive methods for the past
years in encouraging cyclists to
ride according to the law and wear
helmets. We plan on stepping up
our r efforts."
Walraven adds that the OPP will
have officers on general patrol
handing out caution letters to chil-
dren and enforcement for youths
who are riding unsafely and not
wearing helmets. "But
remember, helmets, though
required by law, are your child's
last line of defence. The best
method of keeping your child safe
on their bicycle is to teach them to
ride safely on the road.".
After a caution letter is issued to
a child, a parent must contact the
OPP to confirm that they have
received the letter and the contact
is documented. No charge is laid
when the caution is given.
Thegoal of this program is to
remind children and parents that
the lawsare in place, to encourage
safe cycling. says Walraven.
Officers will be making contact
with children who are riding bicy-
cles in an unsafe manner or not
wearing helmets.
Law requires all cyclists under
the age of 18 to wear a bicycle hel-
met when riding off of private
property. Cyclists are
also required to obey stop signs
and traff c ignals at intersections
and use signals to indicate inten-
tions to stop or turn. A 1 1
of these basic skills are practiced
at local bicycle rodeos held by ser-
vice clubs and the OPP, points out
Walraven.
He adds that parents car be
charged if they knowingly allow
their children to ride without a
bicycle helmet.

Promoting literacy in
young kids has never been
easier for the Huron -
Bruce Early Years Centre.
After organizing the
Family Alphabet Fun pro-
gram, which has been run-
ning at Northside United
Church in Seaforth for the
past five weeks, Lisa
DeJong says she wasn't
expecting many parents to
register due to the fact it's
the, summer.
However, the new pro-
gram was easily filled and
DeJong says she couldn't
be happier with the
results.

"The family response
has been amazing," says
DeJong, who adds they
had 15 kids signed up for
the six week program.
"I didn't expect that good
of a turnout because it's
the summer and families
take vacation," she says.
With a goal of "promot-
ing letter learning, pho-
netics, rhyming and lan-
guage development,"
through interactive activi-
ties, the Family Alphabet
Fun program uses a com-
bination of hands-on and
