Rain erases effects of dry weather, leaving
crops in good shape, says crop specialist
Jeff Heuchert
Even after the high tem-
peratures experienced over
the past couple of weeks,
crops in the county are in
very good shape, according
to crop specialist for the
Ministry of Agriculture,
Food and Rural Affairs
Peter Johnson.
"Most places (in
Huron/Perth Counties) got
an inch and a half to two
inches orrain," he estimates
over only a two day span a
couple of weeks ago.
"That is phenomenal. We
haven't had an all -day rain
like that in a long time," he
says.
"And that's exactly what
the crops like."
As a result, Johnson says
farmers are experiencing
record wheat fields.
"I cannot believe how good
the wheat is. Some farmers'
are doing 20 bushels above
their average," he says.
However, due to the aniple
amount of rain the area has
sustained recently, white
mold in the edible beans are
a concern.
And, due to our mild win-
ter, Johnson says the area is
suffering from what he calls
an "insect year."
"We're seeing a high num-
ber of tarnished plant bugs
and farmers need to be
aware of these. They may
have to spray for them."
Another concern, Johnson
says farmers should keep an "
eye open for, is the appear-
ance of spider mites in their
wheat crop, which tend to
move into the soy beans
once the wheat comes off.
"They're (spider mites)
always a threat, but being
an insect year, we feel the
threat's greater."
