The camp received a donation of a
$4,400 Noelle birthing simulator
from the Bruce, Grey, Huron, Perth
Georgian Triangle Training Board
and campers were able to view a
simulated birth.
The week finished with a mock
disaster at the Goderich airport
where students were made up with
fake blood and injuries and local
firefighters, police and ambulance
attendants used the disaster as a
training exercise.
Roseanne Saldivar, of Seaforth,
said the disaster was the highlight
of the week for her.
"It was really exhilarating. You
got to experience the emotional
stress of a disaster but you knew
you weren't really in any danger,"
she said.
"It was weird to see your friends
all hooked up and on stretchers.
When you saw the p ,amedics act-
ing like they're dying, it was really
emotional," she said.
Overall, organizer Laura Overholt
said the camp was "an absolutely
thrilling and action -packed week."
"It was a great group of campers
and they've been able to take away
so much. For the most part, it
turned out better than I anticipat-
ed," she said.
Camp counsellor Clarissa'
Holding, a medical student at the
University of Western Ontario, said
she was extreme-
ly impressed by
the students and
their enthusi-
asm.
"They were
really a directed
and motivated
bunch, all
informed and
ready to learn"
she said.
Holding said
many of the stu-
dents said their
eyes were opened
to careers they
never would have
thought of pursu-
ing before
attending the
camp.
After the week-
long experience,
Kim Steep, of
Seaforth is lean-
ing towards a
career as a nurse
practitioner.
"It's not a
nurse and it's not
a doctor. It's in
between. They
can do half as much as a dhctor so
it's not as much stress," she said
after hearing a nurse practitioner
speak to the campers.
