Fundraiser product of challenge to address issue of social justice

While many of their peers were
dreaming of summer, St. Anne's stu-
dents had visions of an African ele-
mentary school dancing through
their heads.
In just over a week, the 14 stu-
dents in Stephanie Scholten's Grade
12 religion class collected over
$5,000 in pledges from the St.
Anne's school community.
"On one hand I was surprised that
they reached their goal so quickly,
but on the other hand I wasn't sur-
prised at all because they had the
entire school behind them," she
said.
The fundraiser was the product of
a challenge to address an issue of
social justice in the world as their
final project, Scholten explained.
Through a partnership with Free
the Children — an international
organization of `children helping
children' — the_ students discovered
$7,000 would be enough money to
build a primary school in Kenya.
Admitting their initial goal was
quite large, the students tackled the
project by "putting things into per-
spective."
"Since it was so intimidating we
tried to break things down... if
everyone in the school brought in
$10 we would meet our goal," Mary
Anne Carter explained.
Homerooms throughout the school
were invited to raise money to pur-
chase bricks that would be used to
build the school. The bricks were
posted in the foyer, alongside statis-
tics and information related to the
needs of schools in Africa.

The group also held a hat day and

money.
"We tried to raise awareness
through junior and senior assem-
blies, posters and announcements,"
Angela Van Bakel said. "It think
that's why we were so successful."
"It was something we could all
relate to," Carter added.
A second group of Scholten's stu-
dents took on the challenge of
addressing needs in their own com-
munity, by supporting the Huron
County HW Network.
The student team raised nearly
$1,000 to replenish the coffers of the
network, which

its volunteers.
