FHT in Clinton hopes to be up and running by new year
Cheryl Heath
Dr. Keith Hay is proclaim-
ing the Thursday announce-
ment of Health Minister
George Smitherman that
both Clinton and Seaforth
will be home to their own
individualized family health
teams as a "good news day
for Clinton."
The Clinton -based doctor,
crediting Huron -Perth
Healthcare Alliance
recruiter Gwen Devereaux,
'says there are marked dif-
ferences between how
Seaforth and Clinton will
ire
deliver services as
Seaforth's will be communi-
ty-based while Clinton is
favouring the provider -run
model.
"There are some fairly
substantial differences," he
says. Patient -wise that
means Seaforth rosters
orphan patients in eastern
Huron County to the clinic
while in Clinton, they will
be tied to physicians.
"It's a different approach,"
says Hay. "One isn't better
than the other."
As it stands, six physi-
cians will help comprise
Clinton's family health team
"and hopefully more" in the
weeks to come.
Thanks to the creation of
this team, the Clinton group
will have the opportunity to
hire a number of specialized
health-care professionals,
including a nurse practition-
er, social worker and mental
health professional, among
others.
The beauty of all this,
says Hay, is the creation of
the team will free up physi-
cians' time so they can focus
on their patients' needs and
ideally add more to their
list.
Plus, says Hay, the team's
existence will act as a draw-
ing card for physicians and
health -Fare professionals.
"We think it's an excellent
model for drawing recruit-
ment," he says. "We need
more a doctors."
The team will be based at
the medical centre across
from the Clinton Public
Hospital, and it will be
totally independent from
both the hospital and the
Local Health Integration
Network (LHIN), meaning
once its board of directors is
in place, that board will
report directly to the min-
istry of health.
Hay adds bringing the
team to Clinton has
involved a lengthy process.
"Gwen Devereaux got the
ball rolling. She deserves
the full credit for that," he
says. "It . grew, and we
became involved."
He adds there are still
some "wrinkles" to be
worked out, but the team
should be in place in short
order.
"It's my hope to have a
family health team in place•
and running by the New
Year," says Hay/
