Smitherman announces CCAC funding increase
'End of life' care, home care for hip and knee replacements get more funding

The last days of a Grand Bend
man dying at home last March
from pancreatic cancer were cher-
ished by his family members, said
his daughter Susan Bowman.
"It was a privilege to be there at
the moment of passing and we're
very appreciative of the services of
the palliative care team and fund-
ing that made that possible," she
told Health Minister George
Smitherman, who was in Seaforth
last Thursday to announce addition-
al funding for the Huron
Community Care Access Centre
An additional $714,900 in provin-
cial funding announced in May for
the Huron Community Care Access
Centre (CCAC) should improve
home care, particulary "end of life"
care, said Smitherman.
"The best we can offer is a digni-
fied setting in their own home at
the end. of their lives," he said,
adding that throughout Ontario, the
funding should allow
1,100 more people to
receive palliative care
services in their homes,
rising to 6,000 more
people by the end of
2008.
The additional fund-
ing for Huron County is
broken down to
$221,000 for acute care,
$146,000 for end -of -life
care, $141,000 for home
care supporting hip and
knee replacements and
$206,000 for improved
wages and travel bene-
fits for personal support
workers (PSWs).
Wages for PSWs will
go from $9.65 to $12.50
an hour.

"PSWs. bring the love. The clients
depend on them a .lot," said
Smitherman.
He said by improving the wages,
the province hopes to encourage
PSWs to view., their jobs ` as careers,
improving continuity of care for
clients and possibly sending some of
them up the career ladders into
nursing careers.
Smitherman said the province is
trying to "unlock recipes for more
continuity of care between providers
and patients."
As well, the province is recogniz-
ing the partnership between hospi-
tals and home care with the
increased CCAC funding.
He said waiting lists for hip and
knee replace-
ments should be
reduced by fund-
ing for more
home care for
recovering hip
and knee
replacement
patients.
"If patients are
recuperating
eight days in
hospitals instead
of three, they're
using more of
the hospital's
resources. We have been asking hos-
pitals to play a role well beyond
what they were intended to do," he
said.
Smitherman invited the audience
to get involved in a 10 -year vision of
healthcare the province is currently
planning.
"This is something that's never
been done before in Ontario," he
said.
