Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman interrupts a "casting session" Thursday to congratulate par-
ticipants of the MedQUEST camp on pursuing careers in healthcare as he travelled through Huron County
last week. Western medical students Clarissa Holding and Virginia Gunn and Healthkick organizer Gwen

ing a movie at Seaforth's Lions Park, Ontario
Health Minister George Smitherman visited a
"casting" session with 25 high
school students attending the
MedQUEST camp last Thursday.
"Good for you to do this. This is
the kind of program that will be
copied in a lot of places in
Ontario," Smitherman told the
medical camp participants and
organizers as they practised
applying casts on each other's
arms.
"The opportunities are
immense in healthcare. They're
good jobs that pay well with the
best range of benefits around
these days. And, you'll make a
difference in people's lives," he
said.
Smitherman was touring
Huron County last week as part
of Ontario communities off of the
400 series highways.
And, during his stop at the Huron
Community Care Access Centre in Seaforth,
he said he was impressed by the rural hospi-
tals he'd been touring.
"I've been seeing small hospitals with fan-
tastic technology that are well-positioned to
provide an extended and important role in
care," he said.
Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell said
Smitherman was very impressed with the
rural hospitals he saw and wanted to talk
about his commitment to them.
"We have an integratedhealthcare system
here and we don't get enough
recognition. We can increase our
capacity, we have the ability to
adapt and we're much more
community-based," she said.
"He (Smitherman) under-
stands the difference rural com-
munities bring, to the table. Our
goal is to provide healthcare
when we need it closest to home
and we are on the right track,"
she said.
Smitherman reiterated his
excitement about the "exception-
al young people" he met at the
MedQUEST camp at the CCAC
announcement.
"What folks in this county have
recognized is how many people
you can turn into the doctors of

As I like to say, you can't make a
doctor as fast as you can make a
pizza," he said, berating past provincial gov-
ernments for reducing the number of students
accepted into Ontario's medical schools.
"I have learned an important lesson to take
back to Toronto," he said.
